Who we are

Experience with Perspective

Susan Penland brings a lifetime of horsemanship to her work as a hunter/jumper trainer. Starting at age 4 and going on to compete at premier venues including the World Equestrian Center and Spruce Meadows, she has developed extensive experience both in the show ring and in producing competitive horses and riders.

Today, that experience informs a more focused mission: cultivating strong, capable partnerships through thoughtful, steady training.

A Boutique, Intentional Program

Susan works with a select number of committed riders from cross rails and up. Her program focuses on building long-term partnerships between horse and rider, with an emphasis on ownership and long-term leases, allowing each partnership to develop together over time.

This is not a volume-based lesson program. It is designed for riders who value consistency, responsibility, and honest guidance. A deliberately small client base allows for individualized attention, clear direction, and long-term development built around each partnership.

Partnership Over Transactions

Technical success cannot be separated from the relationship between horse and rider. This is the foundation of Susan’s philosophy.

She emphasizes:

  • clear communication

  • emotional steadiness

  • strong foundations, both on the flat and over fences

  • responsible horsemanship, with the horse’s needs coming first

  • a calm, focused training environment

Riders are encouraged to understand their horses, not just ride them. Progress is measured not only in height or ribbons, but in feel, confidence, and partnership.

Who Thrives Here

Susan is especially passionate about working with adult amateurs and juniors who want to take ownership of their riding. Her ideal clients are thoughtful, coachable, and committed to steady, long term improvement.

In this program, goals are realistic. Standards are high. Growth is intentional. Success is not rushed. It is built step by step.

A Personal Note

At the core of Susan’s work is a simple belief: horses deserve thoughtful riders, and riders deserve honest guidance.

This sport is challenging, emotional, and deeply personal. Her role goes beyond teaching skills. She helps riders stay grounded, capable, and confident through the inevitable ups and downs.

When you step into this program, you are stepping into a partnership built on respect, clarity, and shared commitment.

The goal is not just better rounds. It is better horsemanship.

Start Here

New riders begin with a private assessment ride.

This allows Susan to understand your goals, your current level, and your horse situation, and to create a clear path forward within the program.
